Quincy University is a private liberal arts Catholic university in the Franciscan tradition, located in Quincy, also known as the ''Gem City'', which is the county seat of Adams County, situated in the US state of Illinois, with a population estimated at a number of more than 40 000 inhabitants during the 2000 census.
Quincy University traces its roots back in 1858, when a small group of Franciscan friars left Germany, and 2 years later they founded the institution as St. Francis Solanus College, which received a formal charter from the state in 1873. In 1917 the institution became known as Quincy College and Seminary, which was reduced to simply Quincy College in 1970, the current name being adopted in 1993, 13 years after the college began considering granting graduate degrees.
Today, the university has an enrollment estimated at a number of more than 1000 students, and offers various educational programs in numerous fields of study, including Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in 32 major areas of concentration, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) degree and a Master of Theological Studies (MTS) degree.
Quincy's athletic teams are known as the Hawks, who compete in NCAA Division II, as members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, in all the traditional college sports for both men and women, including in soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, volleyball and football. Their distinctive colors are brown and white.
Among the university's most notable alumni, there are: Rick Hummel - Hall of Fame Baseball writer, Glenn Jacobs - WWE superstar better known by his ring name Kane, Father Augustine Tolton - first African-American Catholic priest, Francis G. Slay - mayor of St. Louis, Missouri, and Josh Rabe - former outfielder for the Minnesota Twins.
